About Us


The Mount Rouse and District Historical Society was formed in 1974 by a group of local residents with a common interest in the preservation of Historical material. The Society collects, catalogues, files and maintains Historical Records, Maps and Photographs and makes them available for public access in the Society’s rooms at the old Penshurst courthouse.


The Purposes of the Association shall be:

a) To promote, encourage and be responsible for the study of local history and genealogy and associated subjects, by members, for the benefit of present and future generations.

b) To maintain and promote a collection of historical and genealogical artifacts as may from time to time be deemed appropriate for the benefit of the Society and the general public.

c) To make, establish and maintain permanent historical & genealogical records, of relevant information, in whatever form is appropriate to enhance these purposes.

d) To maintain a website containing such information as agreed by the Committee to promote the Society and its activities.

e) To acquire and conduct a reference library of such records and other resources, containing information in whatever form is necessary and expedient, for the benefit of members and the public.

f) To conduct such business activity as may be necessary to attain the professional and efficient operation of the Society in order to enhance its various roles and activities.

g) To manage trusts and/or bequests as may be prescribed by the donor or benefactor.

h) To raise funds by whatever means as may, at any given time, be approved by the members in order to attain the stated purposes and the liquidity of the Society.

i) To affiliate with the Royal Historical Society and any other group anywhere which may further the purposes and interests of the Society.

j) To do any and all other lawful things as may be incidental or conducive to the attainment of these purposes.

The Courthouse is open to the public on the first Saturday of every month from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. or by appointment.

Society Meetings are held at the courthouse on the fourth Sunday of each second month at 2.00 p.m.


Individual $10 yearly.
Couple $15 yearly
Life Membership $100.


The Society provides a research service for local and family history.  When requesting information please give as much detail as possible.  Please provide a postal address when making a request by email.
